Inclusive Language

ODI Guide

Author: ODI Team
Published: July 2026

Guiding principles on how to ensure our language is inclusive and nurtures belonging in the workplace.

Build more inclusive workplaces through the power of language.

The Open Doors Initiative's Inclusive Language Guide is a practical resource designed to help employers, managers and colleagues communicate with confidence, respect and empathy. Rather than prescribing rules, it provides clear guidance, real-world context and practical tips on using inclusive language across topics such as race and ethnicity, gender and LGBTQIA+ identities, disability, criminal history and socioeconomic background.

Whether you're reviewing recruitment practices, supporting diverse teams or fostering a culture of belonging, this guide will help you create workplaces where everyone feels respected, valued and able to thrive.

If you are interested in our Inclusive Language Guide, you might also find our toolkit on Becoming an Active LGBTAI+ Ally of interest.
